Kihon - Practicing Stances - Intro Level
During the following exercises, be sure that you assume and maintain the precise posture. Progressively hold each one of them a little longer while your leg muscles are adjusting and getting stronger.
Exhale your air as you drop the center of gravity and bend the knees.
Zenkutsu-dachi
Action: Try to imagine the stance in your mind before you step. From parallel stance with hands on the hips, step smoothly into front stance with left foot forward. Exhale. Hold stance for a count of three as you adjust for correct position. Return to parallel stance. Breathe. Do ten repetitions on one side, then repeat ten more on the other. End with 20 steps alternating.
Stay relaxed. Do not rush. Smile.
Kokutsu-dachi
Action: Imagine the correct stance first. From parallel stance with hands on the hips, step backwards into back stance with the left foot. Exhale. Hold for a count of three to check correct position. Return. Do ten repetitions on one side, then repeat ten more on the other. End with 20 repetitions, alternating sides.
Kiba-dachi
Action: Imagine the correct stance first. From parallel stance with hands on the hips, assume horse-riding stance by opening the left foot out to the left. Exhale. Hold for a count of three. Return. Do ten repetitions on one side, then repeat ten more on the other. End with 20 repetitions, alternating sides.
Notes
Check carefully the position of the knees and ankles. Adjust gradually. Do not force the joints.
