Kihon - Basic Level Practice
• The following sequences are for the purpose of coordinating the stepping with the action of the upper body.
To start, please take your time and don’t speed up until the action of arms and legs are in unison and smooth.
Begin the action with the 1st phase of the step while the arms are doing the 1st phase of the defense or strike. Then do the 2nd phase of the step with the 2nd phase of the arms. With practice the two phases will flow smoothly together.
• We only suggest stepping forward/backward 4 times (start position and three steps) in each series, so that both sides of the body exercise equally. If you have more space you can add more steps.
Note: when stepping backwards, please be sure that no person or object interferes with your exercises. Safety first.
• Once you feel that the steps and the arms are coming together, execute them in one smooth action. Exhale the air while you are stepping, emptying the lungs completely at the end of the arms’ actions.
Focus your attention on the best form possible, correcting the stances from the bottom up.
• These kihon -fundamentals- are a very important building blocks in your martial art. Execute them as if you are polishing a precious stone with each repetition. You will exercise the whole body, both sides of the brain, and achieve a balanced body mechanic.
• If you find that some techniques require more practice, repeat them frequently but do not overdo them. Some techniques may show a progressive improvement with each repetition, other will suddenly become right after a while, without sign of improvement in between. Be patient, have fun and enjoy them. Kihon can be great general exercise with aerobic potential and strength and flexibility improvement.
Action: Execute direct middle punch, in front stance. 4 series (forward/backward).
